USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first nuclear-powered submarine and the sixth vessel in the fleet to carry the name NAUTILUS. On January 17, 1955, the order was given to cast off all lines, and the historic message “Underway On Nuclear Power” was sent. In the years that followed, NAUTILUS broke all records for submerged speed and distance and became the first submarine to cross the North Pole while submerged.
